Meet Tsaatan People in Taiga and Take Part in Ice Festival

Tour Description

This is a tour for those who are eager to experience real winter lifestyle of the Tsaatan, reindeer herders living  in the Taiga. Taiga is a vast Siberian forest that spills over the Russian border into Mongolia. The most exotic part lies beyond Lake Khuvsgul. The Tsaatan, a remote minority group of nomadic reindeer herders, are often identified as “mystical,” and “untouched”.

Their reindeer herding traditions lasted for centuries, first in their native Tuva—a Russian republic—and then, when borders were redrawn under Soviet influence in 1944, in Mongolia. Only a few hundred still follow the traditional lifestyle-  they have become an attraction for the tourists from different parts of the world.

On the way to Taiga, you will take part in annual Ice  Festival on the beautiful lake Khuvsgul for a day. During this festival, the lcoals and some Russian people living in the border area get together enjoying the activities such as, horse sleigh race or competitions of traditional games.

Please be aware that it’s not an easy trip and the taiga is even considered remote for local  Mongolians. Road infrasturcture is not well developed in this area and over land driving will take time.  The transport involves Trans-Siberian train and overland 4*4 WD van. Accommodation wise, you will stay in 4* hotel in Ulaanbaatar, then switch to local hotels, hostels and Tsaatan teepee, locally called Urts.

Enjoy this 11 days and 10 nights tour to the Taiga with your local guide and driver.

The town has had a paved road connecting it to Mongolia's capital city Ulaanbaatar since December 2014, as a part of a government effort to extend paved roads from Ulaanbaatar to all Aimag capitals.

A day at Tsaatan winter camp among communty with authentic culture in personal touch. You may hike, ride reindeer and participate their daily chores.

You can visit other families and get a firsthand knowledge of the Tsaatan life and traditions. Traditionally, domesticated reindeer have been the basis of Tsaatan economy. They are ridden, milked, eaten and their hides are used for covering teepees, making clothing and footwear. During winters reindeer roam at large the rugged mountains and dense forests that straddle the borderline between Russia and Mongolia. Some are kept through the winter for riding. The main herd is then brought back in spring. You may take a reindeer ride or help in the daily chores of life in taiga but overall you should be prepared to observe from a side. Tsaatans practice shamanism where ancestors and natural features are held sacred, and serve as a source of strength or insight for individuals identified as shamans in the community.
