On The Trail of Undur Gegeen Zanabazar

Tour Description

At his height, Zanabazar was recognized as a sculptor par excellence among the Buddhist countries of Asia and the greatest sculptor of Mongolia. He is sometimes referred to as the Michelangelo of Asia as he epitomized the Mongolian Renaissance. During his time in Tibet, Zanabazar came to admire the Nepali style of representational arts favored by the Gelug school and it profoundly influenced his own artistic development and style. Upon his return from Tibet in 1651 and 1656, he revived the art of metal image making in Mongolia, through carved images of various Buddhist gods from bronze or copper. 

This 4 day tour will take to the places where he created his famous scultures, texts and his people. 

Arrival at Ulaanbaatar. Transfer to Hotel in Ulaanbaatar.

City tour: Visit the museum of Fine Arts named after H.E. Zanabazar. 

Choijin Lama Temple Museum: There are 14 statue created by himself and his  students, and  7 statues himself sculpted.

Drive to Mongol els dunes. After lunch we will visit the birthplace of Zanabazar
Genghis Khan's golden son, Tusheet Khan Gomdorji, son of High Saint Zanabazar, was born in 1635 in Mandaa Tolgoi, Yesonzuyil Sum, Uverkhangai Province.
South of the Tahilgat spring, in the place where the saint's umbilical cord was pressed, there is Namjilmaa Buddha's stupa, which is popularly known as Zuil's Old Man's stupa, between the two branches of the Shuvuutai River.
About eight kilometers south of Ovgen Suvar, there is a huge white stone head called Tsagaan katshit. It is said that the ashes of the high priest's diaper were poured there
It has a legend and is said to have grown into today's white stone. They respect it very much and drink it boiled from the stone, and it is customary to make fermented milk.

This multi-colored veined stone is considered to be very good for many chronic diseases. Also, about 3 km south of that place, from Oortsog Head, called Aduun Katti, to Shuvuutai. There are a series of horse-shaped stones that line the river. The local people discuss this as a sign of the high abundance of horses and cattle in this area.
There are also 8 idol stupas. There is a place called Tsagagol where the ashes of the idols were poured. At the age of 5, he was promoted to Ankhor Bogdod in Shireet Phamin Lake.

The Shangkh monastery located in Hujirt sum was founded by the High Saint at the age of 13, i.e. in 1647. It was a large center of Buddhism with more than 1500 monks, consisting of four provinces, 7 datsans, and Noyon Lama temple. 
Although it was destroyed along with the monks, many local devotees kept their precious idols and continued to hold their meetings without interruption in the year 1990.
resumed its activities publicly.

In 1653, the foundation of Tuvkhun temple was laid in the wilderness of mountains. Soyombo letters and other famous deities were made here. Zanabazar's footsteps remained on the rock.  He stepped on Mongolian shoes to show that he had found such strength. During the period of socialism, the monastery was stopped and revived in 1993.

Drive to Kharkhorin, visit Erdenezuu monastery
The Erdenezuu monastery was founded by the father of the High Saint's grandfather, Avtay Sain Khan. In this monastery, 16 figures of the previous reincarnations of H.E.Zanabazar are placed.
He is the reincarnation of the saint Jonon Dharnath, the very first form was a bodhisattva of the Buddha's time. In the monastery museum, the robe worn by the saint when he was 5 years old  there is There are also Vajrapani  and other dieties created by himself and his students.

Having tea with a monk and ask questions about monastic life and their daily practices. 

On the way, visit the old pagoda built on the birthplace of Saint Zanabazar's mother.
